How pages are rendered
Each page is drawn onto an HTML canvas by pdf.js — the rendering engine Firefox uses to display PDFs — and the canvas is then encoded as a JPG. The output is therefore a genuine render of the page, with the same fonts, vector graphics and images the document specifies, rather than a screenshot of a viewer window.
Rendering happens at a scale factor of 2, meaning a standard 8.5×11 inch page at 72 points per inch produces roughly a 1224×1584 pixel image. That is enough resolution for on-screen use, slides, and ordinary printing. It is also why a long document takes a few seconds: every page is fully rasterised on your own CPU.
A practical consequence of rasterising: the text in the resulting JPG is no longer text. It cannot be selected, searched or copied, and a screen reader cannot read it. If you need the words, extract the text instead — converting to images and running OCR to get them back is a lossy round trip with no upside.
JPG or PNG for PDF pages
JPG uses lossy compression tuned for photographs. It handles gradients and continuous tone extremely well and produces small files, which is why it is the right default for scanned pages, pages dominated by photos, and anything destined for email or the web.
PNG is lossless and better suited to sharp edges. Text and line art rendered to JPG can show faint ringing around high-contrast strokes — the classic compression artefact — which PNG avoids entirely, at the cost of a substantially larger file.
The rule of thumb: photographic or scanned pages, use JPG; pages of dense small text, diagrams or screenshots where you will zoom in, prefer PNG. At the 2x rendering scale used here, JPG artefacts on ordinary body text are difficult to notice, so JPG is a safe default for most documents.
